Keep Cadent’s critical equipment safe, compliant and ready to serve

As a Lead Gas Engineer within our Plant, Tools & Equipment (PT&E) team, you’ll play a key role in keeping the equipment our operational teams rely on safe, compliant and performing at its best. This isn’t just about mechanical repairs – this is about protecting the quality, reliability and safety of every tool and asset used across the East of England network.

Based from our Peterborough workshop, you’ll travel across regional PT&E sites to maintain, test and repair a diverse range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. From gas detection instruments and fire extinguishers to generators, drilling, lifting and bagging‑off equipment, you’ll ensure every item meets safety standards and is ready to support frontline operations. You’ll also be the go‑to person for fault finding, equipment servicing, calibration support and the day‑to‑day running of a busy PT&E environment.

This is a hands‑on, varied and highly practical role where your technical skill, problem‑solving ability and safety‑first mindset will have a direct impact on the resilience of our network.

Why you’ll love this role:

This role offers variety, technical challenge and the opportunity to work with highly specialised equipment that keeps Cadent’s operations running.

  • Mechanical & Electrical Maintenance – Carry out testing, servicing, repairs and inspections on a wide range of PT&E assets, including equipment for hazardous environments.
  • Workshop Operations – Lead day‑to‑day workshop activity, manage equipment drop‑offs and diagnose faults brought in by engineers.
  • Safety, Compliance & Governance – Ensure compliance with PEWER, LOLER and safety standards; support audits and champion safe working across PT&E.
  • Calibration & External Liaison – Manage calibration requirements, liaise with external providers and ensure equipment is returned safely and on time.
  • Fire Safety Support – Check, service and order fire extinguishers for E&I sites, ensuring compliance across the network.
  • Systems & Data Management – Maintain accurate records in SAP (your “PT&E bible”) to track maintenance, repairs, and equipment status.
  • Long‑Term Development – Access manufacturer training, obtain in‑house PAT certification, operate FLT equipment and build deep PT&E expertise.
  • Team Culture – Join a close‑knit team of seven, with buddy support, shared learning and a collaborative approach.

What you’ll bring:

You’re hands‑on, technically capable, and motivated to work in a role where safety, reliability and quality really matter.

  • Mechanical background with experience in plant maintenance, tooling, repairs or engineering
  • Confidence working with electrical or portable equipment (PAT testing training provided)
  • Ability to diagnose faults, solve problems and carry out high‑quality repairs
  • Computer literate with the willingness to learn SAP and follow digital workflows
  • Strong safety awareness and understanding of PEWER, LOLER and general equipment compliance
  • Comfortable lone working and travelling across the East of England region
  • Full UK driving licence (essential) – A company van will be provided for your travel and should be used for work purposes only
  • Willingness to complete manufacturer training and internal PT&E certifications

If you’re ready to take on a varied, hands‑on role where your expertise keeps our people safe and our equipment performing, apply now.

Interviews will start from week commencing Monday 30th March.
