Job Purpose

The Engineering Team within COO is responsible for implementing the Engineering Framework (Competence, Compliance, Legislation, Policy & Procedure) and ensuring that the assets of the Company are fit for purpose by providing technical support to the business.

 

The Gas Quality and Measurement (GQ&M) Engineer will manage compliance with regulations, provide support to the Gas Quality and Measurement Manager and support the wider GQ&M team.  Accountable for ensuring compliance of measurement associated with metering systems and calorific value measurement systems.

 

The role will supply technical expertise by developing and maintaining policy and standards, undertaking assurance activities on critical activities, conducting competency assessments and liaison with key stakeholders.  The role will also involve technical project support for key projects on the GQM portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly skilled and proactive Senior Gas Quality and Measurement Engineer to lead critical activities ensuring network safety and regulatory compliance. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining engineering standards, balancing statutory requirements, regulatory obligations, and business objectives. You will lead and collaborate within project teams to enhance performance, asset condition, and compliance with regulations.

Your key responsibilities include managing processes to demonstrate compliance with G(COTE)R, GS(M)R, UNC, and safety cases, as well as reviewing and approving G17 design and completion packages. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, experience with regulatory frameworks, and a proven ability to build relationships with external stakeholders such as regulators and engineering providers. Your expertise will be critical in ensuring that gas quality, meter assurance, and shrinkage management align with licence and contractual obligations while supporting performance incentives.

Skills and Experience

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience and knowledge of project management complex systems and the maintenance and validation of critical systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the safe and secure operation of computer and instrumentation measurement systems ideally in use with natural gas.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ATEX/DSEAR requirements for natural gas.
  • Excellent IT skills, including Windows, Microsoft applications and SAP.
  • In depth knowledge of gas quality and metering technologies and application.
  • Sound understanding of the gas transmission and distribution system.
  • Specialist experience of working with gas quality and high-pressure gas metering technologies.
  • The ability to form relationships with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority.

 

 

Technical Know How

  • Sound working knowledge of Cadent or gas industry safety and engineering policies, procedures and standards, particularly for the Management of New Works, Modification and Repairs. If not familiar with Company specific requirements, a demonstrable ability to assimilate and develop understanding of engineering policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Sound working knowledge of ATEX and UK instrumentation standards.
  • Experience of operational or technical asset management in gas distribution environment.
